The group has reformed several times since. Following the band’s 1994 tour, Pink Floyd went on hiatus. Despite Waters having been Pink Floyd’s main creative visionary since Barrett’s departure, Gilmour and Mason choose to continue the band, bringing Wright back into the group, and releasing the albums “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” (1987), and “The Division Bell” (1994). Wright left in 1979 under pressure from Waters, who would also leave the band in 1985 to peruse a career as a solo act. Gilmour had joined at the tail end of 1967, replacing Syd Barrett, who had been the band’s main creative visionary prior to his tragic mental decline, and with whom the band had released their debut album, “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (1967). Pink Floyd have released eleven other studio albums, along with singles, eps, and live and compilation albums, and film scores.įrom 1968 to 1979, Pink Floyd consisted of members Roger Waters (vocals, bass, synthesizers, acoustic and electric guitars, percussion, sound effects), David Gilmour (vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, keyboards, synthesizers), Richard Wright (keyboards, synthesizers, vocals) and Nick Mason (drums, sound effects, percussion). The band’s most popular albums, including “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973), “Wish You Were Here” (1975), “Animals” (1977), and “The Wall” (1979), released back to back and often referred to by fans as their “big four” albums, are all some of the most critically acclaimed, commercially successful, and beloved albums of all time, praised for their lyrical concepts and emotional music. The band is known for its lush soundscapes, contemplative lyrics about human society, musical innovation, and visually focused live performances.
